New Challenge Mode: 25K Endurance

Ok so I shared this with the councilors already but it seems to have gotten pushed to the side so I want others to see this. it might be a bit choppy only because it's about 4 different posts in one thread that explain the idea that I am copy/pasting to this thread. Enjoy...

Have you ever thought about the alternatives to survival waves? This just came to mind that DD has survival which is just X waves you can survive through. What about Endurance mode that requires you to survive through X amount of mobs?

My proposal is this; You start out in combat phase and the phase won't end until you have defeated all the mobs. You would be allowed to switch your heroes only a few times throughout the challenge so bring your builders to start. The mobs would slowly enter, first with just one or two goblins/grenadiers at a time. You will have to open your chests quickly and kill the mobs before they do too much damage to your objectives. Your objectives would heal extremely slowly over time so you wouldn't have to sweat the beginning damage. The rate mobs are released would slowly increase until you reach 1000 mobs killed and then the challenge will pick up at full speed. You will have to think quickly as reports flash on your screen about upcoming mobs. "Wyvern rush," "Lightning Bug Swarm," "Kobold Rush," "Ogre Kin Rush," etc. These will be just a few examples of what might pop up on screen and you will have to think quickly and move/sell a few towers to handle the incoming hordes. So for the wyverns it would be wise to sell a few towers to place extra skyguards or for child ogres (trolls? small sized ogres...) it would be smart to switch gears to more crowd control.

As you progress the loot will get increasingly better and you will have time to look at it throughout the endurance challenge. After each 5k mobs you will be able to go to the forge for 30 seconds and take a peek at your new loot. You won't have to worry about picking it up mid combat. Any loot earned will automatically go to the forge, it maybe will drop for a few minutes so you can see that you got a myth/legendary item in the distance, but don't fret about picking it up.

At the end you will receive a set number of loot, each of a certain quality, as a reward along with a level specific reward. This would be like Tinkerer's Lab Assault's reward system minus the ability to glitch it out with the BF Drill so the rewards are hard fought for but worth it.

NOTE: I don't actually think it will be 100K mobs, that would be so long and absolutely insane since Trendy does want to make each mob noticeable in DD2. Playtests show that waves seem to cap at about 300 mobs instead of DD1's 2800+ mobs per wave. So maybe this will be more like 20K to 35K Endurance. It should still be mostly a constant stream of mobs with a few scattered slow points to check new loot but definitely constant. And yes hardcore mode you will still be dead for the entire thing if you die early. Harsh but that is hardcore for ya!

Doing some quick math, if this is supposed to take about an hour with 20000 mobs that would mean you would have an average of 5.556 mobs per second. I don't know what the current release rate is during waves but I believe for this mode it would be good to increase that rate a bit above to make the battle epic and that much more rewarding to win. I wouldn't want to see towards the end a massive spike in the release rate (as was seen in DD1 with the ogre waves and such). It would be steady and heavy.

I want to expand on the slow parts of the battle. I would think that 2 mobs/second would be a good rate to slow down to for about a minute so the players can get their barrings and repair or reorganize towers for the next rush. This would be like the survival build phase only you would still be in the midst of battle.

MOB IDEAS:
For this I think cool mobs could be introduced such as flag bearers and war-drummers. The above release rate is just a statistic and the rate could seem to slow down but it would be cool to see a mass of 20 orcs coming out of the lanes lead by a flag bearing kobold and followed (and slightly buffed by) an ogre war-drummer. It would be like the "rush waves" I spoke of in the first post. This could be called the "Wave of Warfare."

Another thing to keep in mind is the DU shouldn't increase too much for this because builders and dps heroes should constantly be aware and communicating as to what should be moved where to prepare for an upcoming rush. During the rushes stated above there should still be a small stream of mobs coming at your walls. This will pin the players with important decisions and planning to know what towers should be sold in order to prevent the next rush from defeating them but at the same time leaving towers up that can hold the lane.

The closest I've seen is an "endless" challenge but I don't know if that refers to endless waves or an endless stream of mobs. Either way, I really would love to see this coupled with survival mode.

I would also love to test this on a small scale during a playtest if possible. Toward the end of pre-alpha it would be neat to do this with 5000 mobs or so on a similar intensity as if it would last for 20000 mobs. Just to get it up and going. If people can play and last for about 25 minutes I'd assume it would be good to go.

My main idea though is I don't want the same boring survival where you:
1) build once set strategy
2) upgrade everything fully
3) wait until end of wave, repair everything, press g, repeat this step until finished

That was just boring and took hours to do. If you can crank through 20k-25k mobs in 1 hour... that would be such a rush and so much fun.

One last thing. The big issue in my mind which could be a heated topic... Co-op. I think this should be strictly Co-op. It would be hard to balance for one player plus it would be that one mode with great benefits to co-op that might sway more people into playing co-op. The loot would be slightly better than survival (and obviously this would be scaled to be harder than survival), there would be a innate requirement for teamwork, and most of all there will be an urgency to the system that would require no AFK players.

I know that this feature being co-op only will make it seem like solo players are at a disadvantage but I say nay! The game should be scaled so that this is the roguelike challenge that players really have to strive and work together to complete and the benefits will be a boost to the rest of the game, not a requirement for the rest of the game.

Pros:
- No afking
- players that devote time into it get rewarded the most
- co-op will have one feature over solo play by giving players a boost to the other contant
- solo players won't HAVE to play this in order to get gear good enough to play through all the other solo/co-op material. The game is scaled to the rest of the material but Endurance will be knocked up a couple notches to be a true challege that gives the best gear.
- This gear wouldn't EVER make endurance easy by any means.

Let me know what you all think!

Hard mode, using my two heroes, Level 100 Apprentice (Tower damage) and Level 100 jester (DPS), as seen in my youtube videos. Was recording it for Youtube and wow, the Spider Queen was just overwhelming, especially as the Ogres were unannounced. Think I may have to shift down to normal or easy >< Poor me.

I will say that i'm a little shocked that there are not more DD2 videos up. Right now to my knowledge the only one active in the last month or so has been powerpilz. I mean there has been very little pre-alpha play. I don't know what restrictions the council members are under, but I just figured there would be more vids, almost weekly if not bi-weekly.......

Making cooperative gameplay more valuable

While I was re-reading the topic Using Sub-Objectives to Encourage Better Cooperative Gameplay I came up to a simple question:

What is needed so that people are willingly going to play DD2 together, as a team?

To answer this question, we need to know why a lot of people preferred to build alone in Dungeon Defenders 1, rather than communicate with others and build together.

Most games - in the higher levels - where like "You have better stats? Nope, okay then I am gonna build. Plz just do nothing (upgrade)."

So what we need is simply a way to reward cooperative playing, because there was simply none.

Actually, there are the following features in DD1:

1. As the hero you build towers with, you get a tower damage bonus. In my opinion, this is an important point, I hope this will be also be implemented in DD2.
1.1 Additional idea: When building as a squire, I would rather give a tower health bonus than tower damage. So if you want to be a tank, and also build your barricades, you have more health on towers and can also be skilled as a dps char.

2. You can change to any hero while building, what makes the cooperative aspect pretty useless. DD2 went in the right direction with the hero deck. As I've seen, there are (actually) four heroes where you can have three in your hero deck. That's great.
Don't give us the possibility, to use all available heroes when grouping up.

If there's going to be a solo mode implemented (what I think it will be), then make more deck slots buyable. Depending on the the amount of heroes, you should never be able to have all heroes in deck while playing coop.
Maybe you could buy extra deck slots for the solo mode, so that you will have the ability to also build everything on your own.
(Of course, if there are e.g. 6 heroes available at DD2 release, the hero deck should have more slots.)

3. DD2 is focussing on coop gameplay? Then do it right. Higher the base xp amount you can get every round when playing with 4/4 (x/x) players. Also have a (litte) higher chance of getting better quality loot.

4. In DD1 we have 100 levels, a wide range of possible skill points invested in stats, and even higher armor stats, resulting in 3k, 4k or even 5k stats, what makes it very hard for new players to be able to keep up.

My suggestion is, maybe the most important here, after reaching a certain level (e.g. 50) just give us only more available prestige/veteran ranks, which are harder to reach and only improve actual stats with additional percentage. So when reaching prestige rank* 1 (maybe show the 50 with a different icon), you have the ability to give addtional x% to your selected stats.
E.g. at prestige rank* 1 you can give to 3 different stats a bonus. That means, you can still get better relics and the x% bonus is always the same at this rank.

What do you think?
Maybe other people also have some ideas of better rewarding cooperative gameplay. Feel free to add some ideas.

* just a placeholder

Edit:
Just a short explanation on these points. I think it's important not to split the community like in DD1. As a player with over 500 hours played, there was no chance for new players playing together with you (except they wanted to be xp boosted). I want to be able to play with all players together and not only with the best 5-10% (of course, at least the level requirements for the maps should be reached).

Helllloo DD!

Title says it all, sad to see such old pieces of mine go but im seeing alot of things go nowadays it seems :P
minimum bid on everything but dps acc's is one half cube (3 coal)
bid increments at also 3 coal or half a cube OR MORE.
no stupid drama. Auction ends sometime on saturday.
i personally farmed surprisingly all of the accs. and the big picture of the (yes possible) 4x200 bracers are the newest piece. the dps armguards are a very bright red, sorry it got cut out. the nimbus bracers are a pretty white. i know they arent particularly effective acc but balance looks sexy.
i hold the right to not sell if i think its not a good price or i change my mind at any time. i can reject offers that are from shady people or whomever i chose.
Accepting:
cubes
coal(6x1)
Labruns (10x1)

I have built up hundreds upon hundreds of hours trying to put together sets, get good items. Then people come in and ask for things at ridiculous prices... I have had people get mad because I wouldn't sell a set of trans armor that will max for 600m. Then they tried to tell me my math was off. The sets would max and you would know that if you knew anything about the game. Either way you win. I am running my shop today and all my trans armor that will max is in my store. If you feel like its worth more please drop some coal. My user name is theoracleprodigy. The store name is something like trans armor, and some myth.

I also have an ultimate and three supreme on my counter. Please send me offers, I will state that the ultimate is not great. It has 300 ups and will only be a little better than most trans. Still I would like at least 1 cube for it. If you are interested I should be back around 6:30 cmt. Till then my store is up and running, enjoy cheep prices on tons of trans sets in my shop.

I guess in the long run my bigger question is this. How do other store owners have success in running a store? I really don't have the patients to sit for hours for that one person that is willing or able to give cubes, coal for items. Its so rare anymore that anyone has coal or cubes to give for items. Its even more rare that they are willing to pay market value.

Hero Preview: The Monk

Dungeon Defenders 2 Monk-Blog

We’re over halfway through our pre-release hero reveals, and we hope you’re getting pumped to step back into the world of Etheria! Thanks to your feedback, this month’s hero reveal showcases a favorite of many: The Monk!

From a young age, the Monk was trained in techniques that would aid his allies. That focus on support has only grown over the years. Not only does he use a combination of auras and abilities to truly embrace his role as the steadfast support hero, but he also fills a powerful niche in Dungeon Defenders II, being one of the strongest anti-air heroes in the game.

Dungeon Defenders 2 Chi Blast

Team Goblin’s Blasting Off Again!

In the original Dungeon Defenders, the Monk’s abilities had multiple functions to support his teammates. His new ability Chi Blast continues to build on this, as it does two very important and distinct things. When it passes through a defense, it significantly buffs that defense’s damage for a brief period of time. And when it hits enemies, it knocks them back. This allows you to jump behind a well-guarded choke point and fire off a Chi Blast to boost the defenses and push enemies away, giving you a chance to repair. Or you could just engage in the Trendy team’s favorite past-time--blasting Orcs off ledges.

Dungeon Defenders 2 Boost Aura

The Chain Will Keep Us Together

Though he’s capable of great versatility, the core of his toolkit revolves around Auras, which make up all but one of his defenses. Boost Aura, inspired by the Monk’s Defense Boost ability in the original Dungeon Defenders, links together defenses in its radius, granting them extra damage and health. Should a linked defense fall, the rest of the defenses in the Aura’s radius are healed. Boost Aura is great for any choke point, but it’s especially helpful in lanes with Ogres, as juggernaut minibosses have a pesky habit of decimating anything in their path.

Dungeon Defenders 2 Skyguard Tower

Can’t Take the Sky From Him

While Auras are a staple of the Monk’s toolkit, his new Skyguard Tower fills a vital role as one of the strongest anti-air defenses in the game. Air units in Dungeon Defenders are no joke, and the Skyguard has three rotating cannons that take them out with ease, firing concentrated bursts of Chi energy at anything airborne. This includes ground enemies that are hurled into the air by abilities or defenses such as the Huntress’ Geyser Trap!

With three heroes down, we hope you’re planning some awesome combo strategies! Tell us about them in the comments below and you could win a seat on the Defense Council!

The random winner of our Dragonfall Lore blog is Koyre!

Leave a comment to get your hands on the Dungeon Defenders II pre-alpha. We’ll pick a random poster and reveal the winner in our next blog post!
